Curated by Aisyah Sumito and Claire Bushby, Borders and Transitions explored the streets and surrounding environment of the Roe Street Carpark Arcade, a high-traffic transitional space in Northbridge. The project investigated the psychogeographical, cultural, and environmental contexts of this site.
The arcade, as a border territory, is a space briefly passed through on the way to somewhere else. Artists Sophie La Maitre, Marina van Leeuwen, and Sophie G Nixon delve into the unnoticed, offering intimate explorations of this overlooked area.
Through their work, La Maitre, Van Leeuwen, and Nixon uncover hidden layers—whether it’s peeling paint revealing histories long past, invasive weed species growing through cracked pavement as a reminder of settler impacts, or the wetland history of Northbridge now buried under concrete and brick.
Borders and Transitions was commissioned by the City of Perth for the James St Light Locker Art Space.
